Out-of-favour Prithvi Shaw is set to play for English County side Northamptonshire in order to revive his floundering career. Shaw, who has been struggling to score runs with the bat on a consistent basis for a long time, will make his Northamptonshire debut against Gloucestershire in Cheltenham in the One-Day Cup.
"It's a great opportunity for me and I'm really thankful to Northamptonshire for giving me this chance to express myself here," Shaw was quoted as saying in a media release.
"It's going to be amazing I think and I'm really looking forward to it," the release added.
Shaw's arrival was delayed because of visa formalities as he could not play two four-day County Championship fixtures.
Shaw who played his last Test against Australia in 2020 was not among the names being considered for India’s tour of West Indies. As Cheteshwar Pujara got dropped after India’s loss to Australia in World Test Championship 2021-23 final, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad were included in the Test squad. Shaw has been ignored due to his alleged off-the-field behaviour as well.
India’s Under-19 World Cup 2018-winning captain struggled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season for Delhi Capitals (DC) as well. He scored just 106 runs from eight innings at an average of 13.25 including a solitary half-century.
Shaw had an inconsistent Ranji Trophy in 2023. The Mumbai batter scored 595 runs from 10 innings at an average of 59.50 including one century and one half-century. However, his record-breaking 379-run knock stood out of the lot.
He has played a total of five Tests and scored 339 runs from nine innings at an average of 42.37 including one century and two half-centuries. His last international appearance was in a T20I against Sri Lanka where he got out for a duck.
