Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar does not put captain Rohit Sharma in the list of India's all-time batting greats. Manjrekar feels Rohit is an excellent batter in limited-overs cricket but as far as 'All Time Indian batting Great List is concerned', the red-ball format has more weightage.
"Rohit Sharma does not fit in All Time Indian Batting Great list because we're talking about legends like Gavaskar (Sunil), Tendulkar (Sachin), Dravid (Rahul), and Virat (Kohli). Rohit does not quite make it there," Manjrekar told Prasar Bharti Sports.
Manjrekar hails Rohit’s approach in the ODI World Cup 2023, calling him a selfless cricketer. Also, he pointed out his record for the highest individual score in the format (264).
”But if you look at one-day cricket, selflessness, or captainship, then you have to mention Rohit Sharma. Especially after the 2023 World Cup, the love people have for him is on another level. People saw that he was never thinking about himself; he was willing to sacrifice his own interests for the team’s advantage. That's his real speciality. His easy domination in limited overs cricket was always pleasing, almost making 300 runs in one ODI innings. But when you talk of All Time Indian Batting Great, Test cricket holds more weightage, I don't think he made a big impact in that format," Manjrekar added.
Rohit nears milestone in international cricket
Rohit is India's fourth-highest run-scorer in international cricket (T20Is, ODIs and Tests combined). He is 300 runs away from completing 300 runs in international cricket. On Australian tour, he will make his 500th international appearance.
Rohit’s Test career ended in Australia
Rohit drew curtains on his Test career after the 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 on Australian soil. He averages 40.57 in Tests with 4,301 runs from 67 games, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
Rohit’s fantastic ODI career
In ODIs, Rohit is the third-highest run-scorer for India and 10th overall. He is likely to surpass former India captain Sourav Ganguly on the list next month. From 273 ODIs, he has 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76. He has 32 centuries and 58 fifties in ODIs. His strike rate of 92.80 is only second to Virat Kohli among the top 10 ODI run-scorers. It is the only format Rohit hasn’t retired from.
Rohit, a two-time T20 World Cup winner
Also, he retired as the highest run-scorer in T20Is. From 159 T20Is, he has 4,231 runs at an average of 32.05, including five centuries and 32 fifties. He won the T20 World Cup 2024 as captain. He was part of India's T20 World Cup 2007-winning squad as well.
