Indian captain Rohit Sharma is planning to compete in the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be held by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, intending to add a third title to his collection after leading India to consecutive International Cricket Council (ICC) event titles. The competition is still about 30 months away because the event will take place in October or November. According to a Cricbuzz report, Rohit is preparing to participate in the event, which will take place in April 2027, a few months after his 40th birthday. According to the information that has been made public, Rohit will work with Abhishek Nayar, the Indian team's assistant coach, to 'focus on his fitness, batting, and approach'.

Rohit turns down ODI retirement

Before the 2025 Champions Trophy, Rohit's future was a big topic of conjecture. However, in the press conference held after the final, the Indian captain denied the rumors that he would soon retire from ODI cricket. He made it clear that he have no plans of retiring from the format. He did, however, express skepticism about competing in the 2027 World Cup in a subsequent conversation.

"It's very hard to say that right now but I'm keeping all my options open. I want to see how well I'm playing.Right now, I'm playing really, really well, and I'm enjoying everything I'm doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can't really say 2027, because it's too far, but I'm keeping all my options open," he said

"As long as I'm enjoying the sport, I'm enjoying playing the game, doing what I'm doing for this team, I will continue to play. It is something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there's so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don't want to leave this team. The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them," he added.

Rohit has the opportunity to become the oldest player and captain to win an ICC event and the first to do so in his forties if he chooses to compete in the 2027 World Cup. Rohit has the opportunity to become the only captain to win all three ICC events, joining MS Dhoni. The only item missing from Rohit is trophy collection is the ODI World Cup. With four ICC trophies, the Indian captain is tied with Virat Kohli for the most and holds the second-highest total in international cricket.

Uncertainty over Test future

However, following a dismal 2024–25 season in which the Indian captain amassed just 164 runs in 15 innings at an average of 10.93, there is still uncertainty around Rohit's Test career. In a season where he played at least 15 innings, this is the lowest average for any of the top seven batters. Due to his dismal performance, Rohit was forced to miss the historic fifth Test match against Australia in Sydney.

In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he scored just 31 runs in six innings at an average of 6.20. According to the same article, Rohit plans to keep playing cricket in both Test and One-Day International matches. The star opener's inclusion in the group to travel to England for a highly anticipated five-match Test series has not yet been decided by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Only after the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) concludes is a decision anticipated.

India will also need to appoint a new skipper for the longest format if Rohit is not chosen for the trip to England, which starts with the series opener in Leeds on June 20. Being the appointed vice-captain in red-ball cricket and having led India in two matches in Australia, Jasprit Bumrah is the front-runner for the top position. But his injury issues have raised questions about his promotion. Following the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit said goodbye to T20I cricket last year. He was replaced as team captain in the shortest format by Suryakumar Yadav, who will command the team in the tournament's 2026 edition when the Men in Blue try to defend the main event at home.
