With Virat Kohli stepping down as India's Test captain, the country's most successful captain's reign in the longest format came to an end. The 33-year-old will be remembered for making a crop of India's fast bowlers who could have taken 20 wickets under any circumstances. Kohli has been in constant controversy over his captaincy for some time now, with the BCCI now making its statement on the issue, Virat's decision came as a shock for the board treasurer Arun Dhumal.
“Virat beyond doubt has been the most successful captain, be it home or overseas. He has contributed immensely to Indian cricket. We respect his decision. I would like to convey my best wishes to him. He will keep contributing with his bat and I am sure with his mentorship and who ever takes up this assignment (captaincy), Indian team is going to rewrite many stories in the time to come.” Dhumal told Sports Tak.
Dhumal termed Virat's decision as shocking and said he could have carried on for 2-3 years. Kohli contacted the board secretary to announce his resignation.
“It indeed came as a shock. Personally peaking he could have contributed for another few years but then he must have thought about it and it is his decision and we respect it. He spoke to the secretary (BCCI) (Jay Shah) , he told that he would someone else to take over as Test captain but he will keep contributing to team India and I am sure he will be a great asset in the time to come,” he added.
When asked about the next captain, the treasurer said that it will be completely be the call of the selection committee.
“This is selection committee’s decision. They would deliberate among themselves and who so ever they deem fit to be the best person to take over from here, will be given the job," he signed off.
'Virat Kohli yesterday had long chat (right after the Match) with the head coach Rahul Dravid. Both just not discussed the Test series loss but at the same time Virat informed Dravid about his decision the he wants to relinquish Test captaincy with no discussion with teammates. After informing coach Dravid he called up BCCI secretary Jay Shah and told him about his decision and the latter accepted his decision at the same time," a source privy to the development told Sports Tak.
