Umpiring howlers are frustrating and over the years it has led to ugly confrontations. In a TNCA club match, Baba Aparajith was involved in an ugly spat with the umpire after he was given out while the batter claimed there was no inside edge.

The incident took place in the clash between Jolly Rovers Cricket Club and Young Stars Cricket Club. Aparajith was well set and a partnership between him and Sai Sudharsan was building in the run chase.

Right-arm off-spinner Hari Nishaanth bowled a massive turner. The ball hit Aparajith and hit his pads before the forward square leg fielder took an excellent catch. Nishaanth appealed and the umpire raised his finger almost instantly which shocked the batter.

Aparajith was in disbelief and had a long heated exchange with the umpire. Eventually, the fielders got involved too as the batter was not willing to walk off the ground. After few minutes, Aparajith was walking back to the pavilion when he heard something and retaliated. This time it was an opposition fielder and the umpires had to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating.

The 29-year-old got out after scoring 34 runs from 63 balls including one four and a six. Despite the wicket, Sudharsan ensured that Jolly Rovers get over the line. Sudharsan remained unbeaten for 67 off 92 balls. He got the much-needed support from Dhruv Shorey who scored 29 runs. Jolly Rovers won the game by six wickets.

Not long ago, India women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was involved in an ugly spat with a Bangladesh umpire. Harmanpreet was given out lbw while she claimed that the ball had hit the bat. She pointed towards her bat while walking back to the dugout. Later, she criticised the umpiring in the post-match presentation and asked Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana to bring the umpires while posing with the trophy.

Harmanpreet faced a two-match suspension and a fine of 75 per cent match fee from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for flouting the board’s code of conduct. TNCA is yet to react to the incident.
