Former India cricketer Yograj Singh believes that his son Yuvraj Singh deserves all the credit after young batter Shubman Gill was announced as Rohit Sharma's successor to lead India. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar on May 24 confirmed that Gill will be as next Test captain and his first assignment will be the upcoming series against England.
While speaking about Yuvraj, Yograj called his son the “greatest cricketing brain”, saying the former India batter taking Gill under his wings played a huge role in the youngster developing the way he did and eventually becoming India's Test captain.
After Rohit's Test retirement, there was a debate around India's next Test captain. Several pundits suggested Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant's names. However, selectors announced that Gill will lead India in whites.
Gill's numbers in England are not that great, and it would be interesting to see how he will lead India. The five-Test match series between India and England is scheduled to start from June 20, and this will be a Test for the under-transition team India.
"The credit for Shubman Gill's performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh. If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh's guidance will play and has played an essential role in that," Yograj told news agency ANI.
"Someone like Yuvraj Singh, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing," he added.
