Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer is a man on a mission. In Mumbai's Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 campaign opener, Iyer reached his century from just 50 balls. He scored 55-ball 114 at Narendra Modi Stadium Ground 'B', Ahmedabad against Karnataka on December 21.
Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal won the toss and opted to bowl first. Mumbai lost the wicket of Ankrish Raghuvanshi early in the innings. Raghuvanshi got out caught and bowled to Vidyadhar Patil.
Young Ayush Mhatre and Hardik Tamore rebuild the innings. Tamore batted with patience whereas Mhatre looked to score quickly. They shared a 141-run partnership for the second wicket. Praveen Dubey broke the partnership in the 30th over. The opener scored 78 runs from 82 balls including six fours and a couple of sixes.
A few overs later, Shreyas Gopal knocked over Tamore. The wicketkeeper's 94-ball 84 was laced with seven fours and three sixes. Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav did not take much time to attack. Suryakumar could not bat for long as he got out lbw to Dubey for a 16-ball 20 featuring two fours and a six.
In the last 10 overs, Iyer and Shivam Dube launched a brutal onslaught. Iyer took 31 balls to reach 50 balls. He did not take too many deliveries to reach three figures. He remained not out for 114 from 55 balls. His knock was studded with five fours and 10 sixes. On the other end, Dube remained not out for 36-ball 63. He hit five fours and as many sixes. They shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 148 runs from just 65 deliveries helping Mumbai post 382/4.
Iyer to play ODIs at home next year
This is Iyer's 13th List A century. His last ODI appearance was against Sri Lanka in Colombo. India lost the three-ODI series 2-0. Iyer will be seen back in action on the international stage when England tour India for five T20Is and three ODIs. Iyer has been out of the T20I side since December 2023. However, he will play in the ODI series against England. It will be the last ODI series ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
