Retired from international cricket seven years ago, AB de Villiers is still setting standards of fielding. In the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025, South Africa Champions captain AB de Villiers put in a stunning slide and just before touching the boundary rope, flicked the ball back to his teammate Sarel Erwee who completed the catch.
The incident took place in the ninth over of the innings. Yusuf realised it is time to take the aerial route to keep up the required run rate. He hit leg-spinner Imran Tahir over deep mid-wicket. De Villiers was running to his right and took the catch. Just when he realised, he would go outside, he put in a slide and lobbed the ball towards nearly fielder, Erwee. Yusuf was left gobsmacked with the relay catch.
De Villiers-led South Africa Champions outclassed India Champions in all departments of the game. With an unbeaten 39-ball 37, Stuart Binny was the defending champions' highest run-scorer. India Champions managed to post 111/9 in the run chase of 200 and lost the match by 88 runs. Captain Yuvraj Singh did not walk out to bat due to an injury he sustained in the first innings while fielding.
De Villiers was impressive with the bat scoring an unbeaten 63 off 30 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes. His knock and cameos from other batters helped South Africa Champions post a daunting total of 208/6. De Villiers wreaked havoc in the penultimate over of the innings against his former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) teammate Vinay Kumar. In the penultimate over, Vinay was hit for three sixes and a four by De Villiers.
Second win a row
This was De Villiers' second appearance in the WCL 2025. In the previous game against West Indies Champions, he was dismissed for just three runs by left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn. In the rain-curtailed match on July 19, South Africa Champions by bowl out. WIth two wins in a row, South Africa Champions are at the top of the points table. Their next match is against England Champions on July 24 at Grace Road, Leicester.
