West Indies captain smashed century after being stretchered off the field

At the Lahore City Cricket Association Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan, the West Indies lost to Scotland by 11 runs to start their ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 qualifying campaign on a somewhat poor note. Their chances of making it to the major event in India later this year would be severely damaged by this. But one of the most valiant performances on the field came from Hayley Matthews, the captain of the Caribbean and one of the best all-round players in the modern game.

Hayley Matthews' heroic hundred

On a sweltering afternoon in Lahore, Hayley Matthews, batting for the West Indies, put on a one-woman show while pursuing 245. The captain of the West Indies held his ground as every other batter was dropping like nine pins. But she was overcome by the cramps in her body. She had to be removed from the field due to injury while she was on 95.

She returned to the field when the eighth wicket fell, but she was unable to continue after hitting four more runs and reaching 99. She needed to be carried off the field after being injured and retired for the second time. Matthews batted again after the ninth wicket fell, eventually reaching her century. She hit 114 off 113 balls in an innings full of 14 boundaries, making her the only player in the West Indies innings to stay out.

West Indies restricted their opponents to a respectable 244 after choosing to bowl first against Scotland. Megan McColl managed to blast a knock of 45 runs, while Sarah Bryce was the best scorer with 55. With the ball, Hayley Matthews was outstanding, taking four wickets for 56 runs in her ten overs.

Despite Captain Matthews' heroic century, the West Indies could only muster 233. She therefore became just the fourth player in history to take four wickets in a women's ODI match and score a century. The Caribbean women's team lost by 11 runs in spite of her incredible performance.
