England’s young all-rounder Jacob Bethell kept the Wankhede crowd quiet with his exquisite yet destructive strokeplay in the high-scoring T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against India. Bethell’s century went in vain but he entered the record books. The youngster became the first batter in history to score his maiden century in each format in international cricket. Bethell scored his maiden first-class century in Tests in the Ashes 2025-26. Last year, he scored his maiden List A century in an ODI against South Africa at Lord's. Now, Bethell has scored his maiden T20 century in T20Is, before domestic T20s or franchises T20 cricket.
Bethell achieves multiple feats
Chasing a huge target of 254, Bethell scored 105 from 48 balls before he got run out in the last over. He became the fourth England batter to score a century in T20 World Cups, joining Alex Hales, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook.
Bethell's 105 is the highest score by a batter in an unsuccessful T20 World Cup run chase. The previous record was held briefly by Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett who scored an unbeaten 97 against India last week.
Bethell became the third batter whose century went in vain in a T20 World Cup match. The first was legendary West Indies batter Chris Gayle who scored 117 runs against South Africa in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. In the current edition, Canada's Yuvraj Samra scored 110 runs against New Zealand in losing cause as well.
Bethell’s 105 is the highest score by a batter in a knockout T20 World Cup game. He broke a record which was just 24 hours old. New Zealand opener Finn Allen scored a record-breaking unbeaten 33-ball century against South Africa in the semifinal at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Brook sees 'serious money' in Bethell's future
Despite the defeat, skipper Brook reserved the highest praise for Bethell. He predicts that the youngster is going to make a lot of money in franchise cricket.
“I think he’s going to earn some serious money in his career and have a fantastic career with England. He showed the world how good he is tonight. Unfortunately we were on the wrong side, but that innings is a huge positive to take away from this competition. Seeing him go out there and take the game on from ball one, showing everyone what he can do, it was special,” Brook said in the post-match presentation.
This was England’s second consecutive defeat to India in a T20 World Cup semifinal. On March 8, India and New Zealand will lock horns in the title clash.
