Australia’s chances of reaching the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage is in the ‘lap of gods’ as described by skipper Mitchell Marsh after the defeat to co-hosts Sri Lanka on February 17. Australia need a number of results to go their way if they are to stay alive in the tournament. The first one being the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland. However, it seems like the rain gods want the Aussies to go back home early as the match at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium has been delayed due to rain.
Australian players would hope that the game between Zimbabwe and Ireland goes on. If Ireland beat Zimbabwe, Australia will remain alive in the Super 8 race. Ireland have a slightly inferior net run rate (NRR) compared to Australia. If Ireland win, Australia live to fight another day. However, if rain gods aren't merciful to the Aussies, Zimbabwe and Ireland will share one point each. In this case, Zimbabwe will reach the Super 8 stage with a game to spare in the first round.
Thunderstorms are expected from 5 PM to 6 PM. The toss was delayed due to rain. Australia would home that at least a five-over game is possible and Ireland edge past Zimbabwe.
What happens if Ireland beat Zimbabwe?
In that case, Zimbabwe will face an unbeaten Sri Lanka in their next game. If Zimbabwe win that match, they go through. If Zimbabwe lose two consecutive games, Australia will have to win against Oman by a big margin to make it to Super 8.
Australia selectors face the heat
In the clash against Sri Lanka, skipper Marsh made a comeback. But, half-centurion of Zimbabwe game and newly-added Steve Smith were benched. Former Australia cricketers Mark Waugh, Ian Healy and Simon Katich questioned the team selection as they were humbled by Dasun Shanaka's men despite the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana getting injured early in the game.
