Australia captain Pat Cummins on July 2 (Sunday) confirmed that veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon will miss the remaining three Test matches of the ongoing Ashes series against England. Lyon, who suffered a torn calf during the second Test, is likely to fly back to Australia in order to receive further treatment before starting the rehabilitation process. In Lyon's absence, young off-spinner Todd Murphy is likely to get game time if the Baggt Greens decide to opt for a like-to-like replacement for injured Lyon.
"I wasn’t particularly happy but he was pretty keen to get out there. He did an amazing job. I would imagine he is (out of the series). We have Todd Murphy who did an amazing job in India so he will be sticking around for us," Cummins said in the post-match presentation when quizzed about Lyon's availability for the rest of the series.
Talking about Murphy, the 22-year-old off-spinner gave a good account of his prowess during the Test series against India earlier in the year. Overall, Murphy has played four Tests in his nascent career so far and bagged 14 wickets in the process.
The Baggy Greens took a commanding 2-0 lead against England after registering a fantastic 43-run victory in the recently-concluded Lord's Test. Cummins' men weathered Stokes' onslaught at the 'mecca of cricket' and doubled their lead in the series. Earlier, Australia won the Edgbaston Test by two wickets.
Meanwhile, England Cricket also announced the senior men's national team's squad for the upcoming third Ashes Test match against Australia. The Three Lions squad for the third Test consists of 15 players and all-rounder Moeen Ali has been retained despite missing the second match of the series. While Ali was retained, Rehan Ahmed and Matthew Potts were axed from the squad. The third Test match between England and Australia is scheduled to begin on July 6 at Headingley.
England squad for the 3rd Ashes Test: Ben Stokes (captain), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Moeen Ali, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
Ashes 2023 remaining schedule:
3rd Test: July 6-July 10, Headingley, Leeds
4th Test: July 19-July 23, Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester
5th Test: July 27-July 31 Kia Oval, London
