The three matches of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 will likely to be played in closed doors at the DY Patil Stadium because of municipal corporation elections in Navi Mumbai on January 15. WPL 2026 matches will likely to be played without spectators due to local elections.

The upcoming three matches of Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 will likely be played without spectators at the DY Patil Stadium because of municipal corporation elections in Navi Mumbai on January 15.

Why WPL matches will take place without fans?

According to ESPNcricinfo, local police have told the BCCI that they will not be able to provide enough security for the Mumbai Indians vs UP Warriorz match scheduled on election day. Because of this, the matches on January 14 (Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz) and January 16 (Gujarat Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru) could also be affected.

The WPL schedule was announced on November 29 last year, while the election date was announced later on December 15. As per the report, the WPL committee was informed soon after the election date was confirmed.

BCCI yet to announce

The BCCI has not officially announced anything yet, but tickets for these three matches are not available on the WPL ticketing website. Tickets are, however, being sold for the January 17 double-header at the same venue, featuring Mumbai Indians vs UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru. These will be the final matches at DY Patil Stadium before the tournament moves to Vadodara for the second half.

Disappointment for fans

If the matches are held without fans, it would be disappointing for both players and supporters. Many women’s international players see the DY Patil Stadium as an unofficial home ground for the Indian team, especially after India won the 2025 World Cup semi-final and final there in front of record crowds.

WPL 2026 points table

Gujarat Giants are currently at the top of the points table with two wins in their two matches. The Gujarat-based franchise recently defeated the Delhi Capitals to seal the win. Defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are ranked number two and three, respectively. Mumbai managed to win one match out of two, and on the other hand, RCB played one WPL match so far. Delhi Capitals are at the bottom of the points table with two consecutive losses.
