With this win Delhi Capitals surged to top of the WPL 2025 points table

Delhi Capitals put on a robust all-round show to condemn former champions Mumbai Indians to a nine-wicket defeat in their Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 clash on Friday. This win propelled them to the summit of the WPL 2025 league table. After electing to bowl first, DC effectively contained the defending champions, MI, limiting them to a total of 123 for nine. Jess Jonassen's exceptional bowling, which yielded figures of 3 for 25 in her four overs, proved instrumental in dismantling MI's batting lineup, claiming the crucial wickets of Nat Sciver-Brunt, captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and G Kamalini.

When it was their turn to bat, Delhi Capitals' captain Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma provided a strong foundation for their team's chase. The duo forged a formidable 85-run partnership in just 59 balls, setting the stage for a comfortable victory. Lanning remained unbeaten with 60 runs off 49 balls, playing a pivotal role in guiding her team to the win.

Shafali Verma's aggressive batting display, while highly effective, came to an end as she attempted to hit Amanjot Kaur over deep midwicket. The shot, however, lacked the necessary elevation, resulting in a simple catch for Amelia Kerr near the boundary. Despite her dismissal, Shafali and Meg Lanning had effectively sealed the match for the Delhi Capitals with their powerful opening partnership. Shafali's rapid 28-ball innings included four boundaries and two sixes.

Lanning, who had been experiencing a dip in form, delivered a much-needed and elegant unbeaten knock, featuring nine boundaries. Her composed innings, combined with Jemimah Rodrigues' quickfire 15 off 10 balls, ensured that Delhi Capitals comfortably chased down the target with a significant 33 balls to spare.

In the first innings, the Mumbai Indians, having elected to bat, began with a reasonable start, but quickly lost both their openers, Yastika Bhatia (11) and Hayley Matthews (22), in quick succession. Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has been in excellent form, continued her strong performance. She partnered with captain Harmanpreet Kaur (18), and together they added 38 runs for the third wicket. However, their partnership was broken when Kaur was dismissed LBW by Jess Jonassen in the 11th over.

Sciver-Brunt's innings also came to an end when she offered a straightforward return catch to Jonassen in the 14th over. To further compound Mumbai's woes, Sajeevan Sajana's attempt to accelerate the scoring resulted in her gifting a simple catch to Delhi Capitals' captain Meg Lanning off the bowling of Minnu Mani at extra cover, as she attempted an ambitious shot over the leg side.

The fall of wickets continued, with G Kamalini failing to stem the tide, as she was bowled by Jess Jonassen in the 18th over. At this point, the Mumbai Indians were struggling at 104 for 7 in 17.5 overs. With no established batters remaining, the closing overs became a battle for survival. Despite the difficulties, MI managed to surpass the 120-run mark without losing all their wickets.

This victory propelled the Delhi Capitals to the top of the WPL standings, accumulating eight points from six matches. The Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, slipped to second place with six points from five games. Delhi Capitals are scheduled to play Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their next match on Saturday, while Mumbai Indians will face UP Warriorz in Lucknow on March 6.
