Commonwealth Games 2026: India assured of first medal even before opening ceremony

India's medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has officially opened even before the opening ceremony gets underway in Glasgow. Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has become India's first confirmed medallist after securing a direct place in the women's 75kg boxing semifinals.

The Assamese boxer received a bye into the last four of her weight category, meaning she is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal under Commonwealth Games boxing rules, where both losing semifinalists are awarded bronze.

It marks the perfect start for India's campaign before the country's athletes officially begin their medal hunt across multiple disciplines.

Why is Lovlina Borgohain already assured of a medal?

Lovlina did not have to enter the ring to confirm India's opening medal of the Games. After receiving a direct passage into the semifinals of the women's 75kg category, the Olympic medallist is already assured of finishing on the podium.

Under the Commonwealth Games boxing format, there is no bronze-medal playoff, with both defeated semifinalists receiving bronze medals. As a result, simply reaching the last four guarantees a medal.

Lovlina will now begin her campaign on July 31, when she faces T.K.B.P. Taafaki in the semifinal. A victory will send her into the gold-medal bout, while even a defeat would still leave her with bronze.

India begin Glasgow campaign with early boost

Lovlina's guaranteed podium finish provides India with a significant morale boost ahead of the official opening ceremony. India has sent a 124-member contingent to the Commonwealth Games 2026 despite the tournament featuring a reduced sports programme compared to previous editions.

The country's athletes will compete across eight sports for able-bodied athletes—athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, lawn bowls and swimming—along with five para disciplines.

India's campaign officially begins with lawn bowls fixtures before the opening ceremony later in the day. Among the biggest attractions for the Indian contingent will be Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who returns to reclaim the Commonwealth Games title he won in 2018, having missed the Birmingham 2022 edition due to injury.

Weightlifting is also expected to contribute significantly to India's medal tally, with two-time Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu leading the charge.

With Lovlina Borgohain already guaranteeing India its opening medal, the nation could not have asked for a better start to its Commonwealth Games 2026 journey.
