India-Afghanistan series dates hinge on one major factor, here's what will decide the schedule

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has confirmed that the proposed three-match T20I series against India is still on course to be played, although the schedule is yet to be finalised. While the matches are currently pencilled in for September 13, 15 and 17 in New Delhi, the dates could change depending on one major factor - whether India's proposed white-ball tour of Bangladesh goes ahead.

At present, the Afghanistan series remains tentative as the scheduling is closely linked to developments surrounding the Bangladesh assignment.

Bangladesh tour could determine India-Afghanistan schedule

The three-match T20I series is currently scheduled to be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, those dates may have to be pushed back if India proceed with the proposed six-match white-ball series in Bangladesh.

According to reports, there is renewed optimism that the Bangladesh tour could materialise following recent geopolitical developments. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is hoping to stage the series between September 1 and 13, which overlaps with the tentative dates for the Afghanistan series.

Should the Bangladesh tour receive the green light, the India-Afghanistan fixtures may have to be shifted by a few days. However, there is limited scope for a lengthy postponement as the Asian Games begin on September 24, while India's home white-ball series against the West Indies starts on September 27. The BCCI's decision on travelling to Bangladesh is expected to be guided by the Government's advisory.

Historic series with separate broadcast arrangements

Apart from the scheduling uncertainty, the series is also expected to mark a broadcasting first. Since Afghanistan will officially be the host nation despite the matches being played in India, the series will not be telecast under India's regular home broadcast rights.

FanCode currently holds the digital streaming rights, while the television rights remain available. Zee and Sony Sports are among the potential contenders for the linear rights, with ITW Universe coordinating media and marketing rights for the series on behalf of the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

The series will also be historic because it will mark the first time Afghanistan officially hosts India, albeit on Indian soil. Although Sharjah in the UAE was initially considered as a venue, both boards eventually agreed to stage the series in Delhi, resulting in the unusual arrangement where Afghanistan are the designated hosts while India play at home.
