The Saudi Arabian football team melted hearts with their gesture for injured defender Yasser Al Sahrani, who was stretchered off against Argentina after suffering a horrific injury. Sahrani clashed with Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais in stoppage time of their brilliant win over Argentina and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
The Saudi team on Saturday, 26 November held up his shirt ahead of their match against Poland in support of the player who had to go through a successful surgery in his pancreatic gland at Riyadh. There were no reports about his facial surgery but is expected to return soon.
Saudi Arabia pulled off an incredible win against Argentina in their first match at the FIFA World Cup 2022. Goals from Saleh Al Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari led the Saudis to a shock 2-1 victory over Argentina in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday, November 22. Having gone behind early in the match and then being completely dominated, to turning the game on its head, the Saudis who scored against the two-time world champions have come a long way.
Saudi Arabia pulled level with their first shot three minutes into the second half after Al Shehri powered past Cristian Romero and flashed a low shot into Emiliano Martinez's far corner. Then, just five minutes later, Al Dawsari sealed a famous win soon after with a sumptuous strike from the edge of the penalty area, almost 18 yards from the goal.
However, the same could not be said about their match against Poland, in which the team lost 2-0. After Piotr Zielenski's opening goal, Polish forward Robert Lewandowski scored his first-ever World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia during their Group C match at the Education City Stadium on Saturday, November 26. Upon doing so, the Barcelona forward immediately burst into tears.
It was a brilliant goal, as Lewandowski stole the ball off the Saudi defender and slotted it past goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais with his wand of a left foot. He came close to scoring again in the 90th minute but lost his balance near the post.
