England have received a timely double fitness boost ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 showdown against hosts Mexico, with both Reece James and Declan Rice in contention to feature in the crucial knockout fixture.

Positive news on Reece James and Declan Rice

Tuchel had been anxiously monitoring Rice's condition after the Arsenal midfielder experienced discomfort in his hamstring following England's 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the Round of 32.

Rice has reportedly been managing neural pain in the same hamstring since Christmas and was also substituted as a precaution during England's opening group-stage victory over Croatia.

However, the latest update suggests the midfielder remains in contention for the Mexico clash, providing England with a significant boost in the middle of the park.

There was further encouraging news regarding James. The Chelsea captain, who missed England's previous two matches because of a hamstring issue, has seen scan results return positive, easing fears that his FIFA World Cup campaign could be over.

Speaking after England's win over DR Congo, James had already hinted at positive progress.

"It's okay, I'm feeling good."

Earlier in the tournament, Tuchel also suggested the defender was closing in on a return.

"In the nature of their injury, Jarell is a little bit ahead of Reecey. But the race was close even to make it into the match squad this time, so we need to make sure that we have more matches."

England prepare for demanding Mexico test

England now face the challenge of playing hosts Mexico at high altitude in Mexico City, with the conditions expected to place additional physical demands on Tuchel's squad.

James' potential return could also solve England's right-back dilemma after Jarell Quansah and Djed Spence shared duties during his absence. Tuchel may still opt to manage the defender's workload, especially with tougher challenges potentially awaiting should England progress deeper into the tournament.
