Atletico Madrid has publicly challenged a controversial refereeing decision in their 2-1 La Liga defeat to Barcelona. Diego Simeone’s side has highlighted what the club views as an inconsistent application of rules by the Technical Committee of Referees (CTARFEF).
Atletico Madrid questions refereeing consistency over red card controversy after Barcelona win
In the match at the Metropolitano Stadium, Barcelona defender Gerard Martín was initially shown a straight red card in the 48th minute for a robust challenge on Atletico's Thiago Almada. VAR intervened, prompting the referee to overturn the sending-off and issue only a yellow card instead.
Atlético's social account later posted side-by-side images and a video on X (formerly Twitter), questioning the call by comparing it to an identical tackle from Matchday 25 involving Real Betis player Valentin Gomez and another opponent. In that earlier incident, the CTARFEF explicitly ruled the challenge a red card offense.
The post, accompanied by footage where the referees' committee deemed a similar action worthy of dismissal, which is now making rounds on the internet, read:
"Are we sure about this?"
Under the twee, they also added a video:
Atlético manager Simeone and defender Robin Le Normand expressed frustration post-match, with Simeone stating the officials "got it wrong" and Le Normand suggesting the outcome would differ if an Atlético player committed the same foul.
Barcelona secured the victory despite the heated debate, but the incident has reignited broader discussions about refereeing standards and VAR consistency in La Liga. On the other hand, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has stood by his side and stated that it was not a red card.
