President Donald Trump has proposed that the National Football League should change its name, highlighting that soccer deserves to be called "football" without confusion with the American sport.
President Trump wants NFL to rename itself so soccer can claim 'Football' title
The video is again making rounds on social media just ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Trump, on December 5, 2025, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as he accepted FIFA's inaugural Peace Prize, said:
“We look at what’s happened to football in the United States, or soccer in the United States, we seem to never call it that.”
Trump added:
“Because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that’s called football.”
He added:
“But when you think about it, this [soccer] should be called football. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff. It really doesn’t make sense when you think about it.”
The suggestion reignited the long-standing global debate over terminology, where "football" refers to the round-ball sport in most countries, while Americans use "soccer" to distinguish it from gridiron football.
Trump’s comments, delivered alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, drew immediate attention online and in sports media after a video clip spread widely on social platforms. Meanwhile, the FIFA World Cup is all set to begin in June and will run until July across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
