Brahim Diaz has broken his silence on Morocco’s heartbreaking loss after the Real Madrid star missed a crucial penalty which denied his side AFCON glory against Senegal. The midfielder took the 'Panenka' penalty for Morocco in the second-half stoppage time while both sides were goalless.
While it was a golden opportunity for Morocco, Diaz’s shot landed into the arms of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, leaving the Atlas Lions missing the opportunity in 50 years. The player was captured crying following the loss, which was inconsolable. Meanwhile, Diaz has now released a teary statement taking full responsibility for the title defeat.
Brahim Diaz’s teary message after Morocco's AFCON heartbreak vs Senegal
The Real Madrid midfielder took over his social media account to speak on the heart-rending loss. He wrote:
“My soul hurts”.
The La Liga player continued:
“I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you all gave me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn’t alone. I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all else.”
Diaz stated that he takes full responsibility for the defeat and apologised to everyone who was hurt by the loss. He wrote:
“Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility. I apologize from the bottom of my heart.”
Diaz wrote that it will be “hard” to recover from what happened: “It will be hard for me to recover, because this wound doesn’t heal easily.” However, the player will try to forget those who always had their trust in him.
At last, Diaz wrote that he will continue to work hard until the day he becomes the “source of pride for my Moroccan people.” The Moroccan player finished the tournament as AFCON’s top scorer, yet the moment will follow him is the one he wishes he could erase.
The 26-year-old netted seven goals in five games and received the Golden Boot for being the top scorer, but the player was captured in tears following his Panenka miss, which opened the door for Senegal to steal the final in extra time.
