Cristiano Ronaldo has never shied away from making bold decisions, and his latest revelation is no different. In a move that stunned fans and stirred global headlines, the football icon has opted out of participating in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup — citing rest and preparation for a far greater goal: playing in a record-breaking sixth World Cup.
Prioritizing longevity over short-term glory
In a candid Instagram video shared by his Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, Ronaldo explained the reasoning behind his choice.
“I had some offers to play (Club) World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long, because this is the season of the World Cup, at the end of the season,” said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. “So I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr but also for the national team.”
At 40, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy age expectations with his elite performance levels and uncompromising discipline. His focus now rests firmly on ending the 2025 season with another shot at football immortality — competing in his sixth FIFA World Cup.
All eyes on 2026: A historic milestone in sight
With the next FIFA World Cup set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026, Ronaldo and long-time rival Lionel Messi stand on the brink of history. Both are poised to become the first players in the men's game to feature in six World Cup tournaments.
Already the only male footballer to score in five separate World Cups — a feat achieved in Qatar — Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued excellence ensures he remains an integral part of the Portuguese national setup. He recently guided Portugal to a Nations League triumph with a penalty shootout win over Spain, further solidifying his leadership role.
Cristiano Ronaldo's new chapter with Al Nassr
In tandem with his national ambitions, Cristiano Ronaldo has also committed to Al Nassr by signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until at least the age of 42. His decision not only silences rumors of a possible transfer to participate in the Club World Cup but also confirms his loyalty to the Saudi club as they aim for silverware.
The extension reflects his belief in Al Nassr’s project and underlines a broader goal — achieving personal and team success while meticulously managing his physical demands.
