FIFA World Cup 2026: All teams, groups and more revealed
The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off tournament served as the rehearsal ground for the venues in Guadalajara and Monterrey, as the locations are set to host eight matches. The biggest upset was when four-time champions Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup yet again. It will be the third time in a row that the Italians won't be part of it, as they missed the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 edition in Qatar.
Italy was beaten in Bosnia as Gennaro Gattuso’s side were playing with 10-men for most of the time following a red card for defender Alessandro Bastoni just ahead of the half-time whistle. This is not the first time that the team has been eliminated in the qualification round. They also failed to qualify in 2018 and 2022.
It was Haris Tabakovic who found the net in the 79th minute of the game for the equaliser and forced an extra-time showdown. The Italians were beaten after Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante both failed to convert. While this will be another World Cup year for Italy, here is a list of teams and groups that will fight for the coveted trophy.
