Marc Cucurella admits lack of big-game experience cost Chelsea FC against Paris Saint-Germain.

Defender hints at need for more experienced signings to compete for major trophies and secure UEFA Champions League qualification.

Chelsea is going through a tough time in managing consistency, especially in big games, as the Blues endured a massive 8-2 loss on aggregate against Paris Saint-Germain in the RO16 tie of the UEFA Champions League.

Marc Cucurella opens up on loss against PSG

In an interaction with The Athletic, Chelsea's star defender, Marc Cucurella, has opened up on the loss against the French club. The Spanish international believes that the Blues lacked experience of playing big games against heavy-weight teams.

"We lacked experience. For a lot of players, it was the first time playing a match of that calibre, and we paid the price. You can always make a mistake, but we should have handled it better. There was a return game to play, and if you keep a cool head, you go back to London with a 3-2 defeat (the score with five minutes left of normal time in the first leg) and anything can happen," said Cucurella.

Later, Cucurella took a dig at Chelsea's recruitment policy, as he wants to have a proper blend of youth and experience at the club to win big games at the highest level.

"I understand this is part of the club's policy and that they want to take this direction... signing young players and looking to the future. But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged. We have a good core of players. The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies, you need more," added Cucurella.

Chelsea's inconsistent form in the Premier League

Currently, in the Premier League the Blues stand at the sixth place with 48 points in hand in 31 games. If this kind of form continues, then Chelsea won't be able to play in the UEFA Champions League next season, which would be a big setback for the North-London club.
