Despite missing recent international duty, Lionel Messi has what it takes to feature in another World Cup, according to his former Argentina teammate and current Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano.

Lionel Messi’s absence from Argentina’s March World Cup qualifying fixtures due to injury raised fresh doubts about his international future. With the 2026 World Cup looming—and Messi set to turn 39 during the tournament—fans and pundits have speculated whether the legendary No.10 has another major campaign left in him.

However, Mascherano, now coaching in Major League Soccer, believes age is just a number when it comes to Messi.

Mascherano: “It’s his decision, but I hope he plays”
In a recent media interaction, Mascherano expressed full confidence in Messi’s ability to shine at the next World Cup.

“The physical side and the legs, I have no doubt about it. The mindset, too. But those are personal decisions. It’s his decision whether he'll play in the World Cup or not. I don't have to give my opinion. I can't tell you because I'm not inside his head. What I can tell you as an Argentine, I clearly want him to play.”

He added:

“The decisions are very personal. I try not to interfere. And I can tell you my wish — it’s not my opinion — my wish is, hopefully (he plays), first as an Argentine, second as a fan of this sport. We’ll see.”

Messi still the face of the game
Having finally captured the elusive World Cup in Qatar 2022, Messi checked off the last major honor of his iconic career. With the 2026 World Cup set to be hosted in the United States, the Argentina captain—now a star with Inter Miami—would once again be a marquee presence if he decides to participate.

Messi’s global influence hasn’t waned. His presence in MLS has not only boosted the league’s popularity but also positioned him as a central figure in the build-up to the next World Cup.

Contract situation and what lies ahead
Currently, Messi’s contract with Inter Miami is slated to expire at the end of the 2025 season. However, recent reports suggest that the Argentine icon is expected to sign an extension that would keep him in Florida through the 2026 MLS campaign—potentially aligning his club future with another World Cup appearance.
