A Barcelona star recently shared his thoughts on who he believes is better between Lionel Messi, the club's former legend, and the young rising star, Lamine Yamal. Messi has long been hailed as one of the greatest footballers in history, enjoying an incredible career with Barcelona before moving to Inter Miami in 2023. Now, as Barcelona continues to rise in both domestic and international competitions, the exciting performances of Yamal have made fans and pundits alike start to compare him to the iconic Messi. Let’s dive into what this Barcelona player had to say about the Messi and Yamal comparison.

The Lionel Messi vs. Yamal debate

Barcelona midfielder Gavi recently shared his perspective on the growing comparisons between Messi and Yamal, emphasizing that while Yamal is incredibly talented, there is still no one quite like Messi. Gavi made it clear that he considers the young winger to be one of the best in the world, but still places Messi in a league of his own.

"For me, he is the best in the world, second only to Messi," Gavi said in a recent interview with Sport. However, he was quick to point out that comparing Yamal directly to Messi is not fair. "Lamine is very good, the best at the moment. But it's silly to compare him with Messi because there will only be one," he explained.

Gavi also highlighted the uniqueness of Messi, mentioning that just like Messi, icons like Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets are irreplaceable.

"Messi is unique. Just like there will only be one Xavi, one Iniesta, or one Busquets," he stated.

His message was clear: Yamal is carving out his own path and should be allowed to do so without the burden of comparisons to the legendary figures who came before him.

While Gavi acknowledged the extraordinary performances of Yamal, who recently impressed during Barcelona’s cup campaigns and had a standout summer at Euro 2024, he stressed the importance of forging one’s own legacy.

"We have to make our own way. Lamine is the best right now, and I hope he continues like that," Gavi concluded.

As Yamal continues to shine, his growth suggests that he could soon become a footballing force in his own right, but according to Gavi, it is important to appreciate each player's uniqueness.
