German footballing icon Lothar Matthaus has revealed his favorite player between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The star duo have dominated the world of football for more than two decades.

Lothar Matthaus explains why Lionel Messi is his favorite

Matthaus was in India after he was named as the official ambassador of the upcoming Bengal Super League, and he discussed the Messi-Ronaldo conversation. He pointed out that he believes them to be two different players hence a direct comparison is not possible, but said that he loves Messi for his smartness.

“I don’t like to say that Messi is better than (Cristiano) Ronaldo. It’s very difficult because they are different kinds of players. Ronaldo is more about the power and physicality. Messi is more like the smartest guy, (he’s) more about the entertainment. I am a fan of Messi because of his style of football", he said (via Times of India).

A Ballon d'Or winner in 1990, Lothar Matthaus is considered as one of the iconic players of all-time, because of his success at club and international level. He shared the stage with the graceful Diego Maradona, a rival he admired, and must have seen his similarity to Messi.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo saw great success in their respective careers, winning a total of 13 Ballon d'Ors and various other accolades. They will go down as the greatest rivals in the history of football.

Cristiano Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate rubbishes rumors of rivalry

Cristiano Ronaldo's former teammate at Real Madrid, Karim Benzema, has claimed that he still has a very good bond with the 40-year-old. Both players sit at numbers one and two in Los Blancos' all-time goalscoring charts, having played together for eight years in Madrid.

In an interview with Diario AS, Benzema responded to a question on how he greeted Cristiano Ronaldo in their most recent match between their respective sides. He revealed that despite looking to be cold to his former teammate, they shared a warm moment away from the prying eyes of the public.

“I gave a cold greeting to Cristiano Ronaldo? No, please. We spoke in the locker room before, we hugged. There's a lot of respect, we are fine. We don't need to show off anything in front of the TV", he said (via @MadridZone on X).

Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr in January 2023 and Bezema did the same just six months later, joining Al-Ittihad from Real Madrid. The French player already led his team to a league title, while Ronaldo's wait for his first major trophy with Al-Nassr continues.
