Michael Olise was crowned the Superior Player of the Match by fan vote following France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal in their Group I opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.

On his World Cup debut, the Bayern Munich winger delivered a standout performance as the creative architect of France’s attack. Olise provided a key assist for Kylian Mbappé’s opening goal, created four chances (including two big ones), completed 14 passes into the final third, won 6 of 9 ground duels, and recorded 100% shot accuracy.

France overcame a goalless and competitive first half to take control after the break. Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 66th minute with a clinical finish from Olise’s precise pass,  his 58th international goal, making him France’s all-time leading scorer.

Bradley Barcola added a second on his substitution in the 82nd minute, before Senegal pulled one back late. Mbappé sealed the win with a stunning long-range strike in stoppage time, also moving him up the all-time World Cup scoring charts.

While Mbappé’s historic brace and record-breaking night drew significant attention, many observers praised Olise’s all-around influence and vision as pivotal to Les Bleus’ fluid attacking display. Fan voting ultimately favored the 24-year-old’s debut masterclass.

The result gives France an ideal start in Group I and revenge for their shock 2002 defeat to Senegal. Didier Deschamps’ side now looks ahead with confidence, showcasing attacking depth that includes talents like Olise, Mbappe, and Barcola.
