UFC superstar Conor McGregor has set social media abuzz after revealing his interest in purchasing two football clubs. His announcement, which came shortly after billionaire tycoon Elon Musk was linked with a potential Liverpool acquisition, grabbed attention. McGregor shared his intentions online, only to delete the post soon after.
The controversial figure, who is known for his larger-than-life persona, indicated that he could be interested in buying several clubs from the League of Ireland. Accompanying a photo of him holding the FAI Trophy won by Drogheda United in November, McGregor wrote: "How much is it to buy a League of Ireland team? I might buy two."
Drogheda United distances itself from McGregor’s comments
Although McGregor has ties to Drogheda United, being the cousin of their forward Warren Davis, the club was quick to distance itself from McGregor’s statement.
Drogheda United issued a statement online to clarify that the social media post did not represent the club’s stance. The statement read: "Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned."
This move effectively ruled out any immediate connection between McGregor and the club, as the statement sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the trophy picture.
McGregor’s legal troubles and financial status
Conor McGregor, who is estimated to have a net worth of £200 million, has been in the public eye recently, not only for his business ventures but also for ongoing legal troubles.
He faced allegations of assault in 2018 when he was accused of raping and battering Nikita Hand at a Dublin hotel. McGregor was ordered to pay over £200,000 in damages after a jury found him liable for assault. However, the fighter denies these allegations and may pursue an appeal at Dublin's High Court.
Elon Musk and the Liverpool Rumors
McGregor’s announcement comes on the heels of speculation surrounding Elon Musk’s potential interest in purchasing Liverpool FC. Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual with an estimated net worth of £340 billion, has made headlines with his rumoured interest in the Premier League club. His father, Errol Musk, confirmed in an interview that his son would be interested in buying Liverpool but acknowledged that such an acquisition was not currently in progress.
Errol Musk told Times Radio: "I can't comment on that, they'll raise the price! Oh yes, he wants to buy the club, but that doesn't mean he's buying it."
He further added, "He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to - so would I." Errol also shared that the Musk family has ties to Liverpool, with his grandmother born in the city and connections to the Beatles.
Despite the buzz surrounding Musk’s potential purchase of Liverpool, as per a Mail Sport report, it was revealed that the club's current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have no intention of selling. It is understood that FSG has received no formal approach from Musk and is not interested in a sale, putting to rest any immediate rumours of a change in ownership.
