Yuki Tsunoda On Relationship With Liam Lawson

After years of development with Red Bull's junior teams, the Japanese driver was forced into the spotlight just two races into the 2025 Formula 1 season. He replaced Lawson, who was sent back to Racing Bulls after a dismal time in Australia and China.

Lawson's short spell as a full-time Red Bull driver was marked by a collision in Melbourne and poor performance in China. Despite this, Tsunoda stated that the unexpected change has impacted their relationship.

“We didn’t talk yet (me and Lawson). I’m sure we’re going to be around anyway in Tokyo with the events so let’s see how it goes,” Tsunoda told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Hopefully as a friendship we won’t make anything ruined or get damaged.”

The pair were once close allies in junior categories, but competition has clearly strained their bond: “Probably we don’t have the friendship we used to have… but I think that’s natural, fighting for the seat and everything.

“I know he is a funny guy and I know how to make our relationship good but let’s see how it goes, it’s not easy.”

Tsunoda Knows What's Expected of Him

Tsunoda claimed that his first call came from Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who welcomed him to the team and set clear expectations.

“First call I got was from Christian,” Tsunoda explained. “He said welcome to Red Bull Racing and he was excited.”

Tsunoda stated that Horner provided guarantees about team dynamics, but the primary priority remains on assisting Max Verstappen in pursuing another title.

“He also promised me in some situations that if I’m able to be in front of Max that he wouldn’t necessarily ask me to swap positions and make Max win,” Tsunoda added.

“In the end Red Bull Racing are focused on Max scoring a drivers’ championship. “He has proven himself to have good potential to be a world champion – even though Red Bull seems to be struggling a little now.

“Performance-wise he (Horner) wants me to be as close to Max as possible.
