September 22, 2021 turned into a “golden day” as India’s only two individual Olympic gold medallists Neeraj Chopra and Abhinav Bindra met for the first time at Bindra’s farmhouse in Chandigarh. The moment was special as among the various events in Olympics, only these two were able to clinch gold for the country. After winning the gold medal in the javelin throw event in Tokyo Olympics 2020 on August 7, Chopra had a busy schedule which resulted in the delay.
After the meet, Bindra tweeted,” Was a pleasure to meet and interact with India’s golden man @neeraj_chopra1! I hope that “Tokyo” will be a supportive friend and motivate you to get a sibling named Paris for him in 2024!,” Abhinav also gifted a golden retriever puppy to Chopra named “Tokyo”.
Neeraj overwhelmed by Bindra’s hospitality
Chopra was impressed by Bindra’s hospitality at his farmhouse. After meeting the veteran shooter, Neeraj expressed his gratitude. In a tweet, Neeraj shared his experience after the meet by tweeting, “Took my Olympic medal to meet its elder sibling from Beijing today. Thank you @Abhinav_Bindra sir for your family's warm hospitality and for 'Tokyo' who I will cherish forever!”. The youngster looked happy after meeting Bindra and his family and now his focus will be on upcoming international tournaments.
Bindra created history in Beijing
Abhinav Bindra ended India’s drought in individual gold medal events in 2008. The Dehradun-born athlete won India’s first gold medal in shooting in the Beijing Olympics 2008. In his long illustrated career, Bindra has won more than 150 medals and has been a recipient of Padma Bhushan. Bindra couldn’t repeat history in the next two Olympics in London and Rio as he failed to make a podium finish. After Rio Olympics, on September 4, 2016, Bindra took retirement from the sport.
