India star badminton duo Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy created history on Monday by becoming the first pair from the nation to qualify for the quarterfinal in the history of the Olympics. The duo were supposed to face Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel from Germany but Lamsfuss’ injury forced the pair to withdraw from the Olympics, leading to the match getting cancelled.

The Indian duo started their Olympic campaign by defeating Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar of France. Corvee and Labar lost to world No. 7 Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian of Indonesia on Monday. On the other hand, India's Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa duo are on the brink of elimination from the women’s doubles event after suffering a 21-11, 21-12 loss to world No. 4 Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan on Monday.

After two losses, the French pair has been eliminated and as a result, Chirag-Satwik and Ardianto-Alfian will finish inside the top two in Group C. The Indian and Indonesian pairs will face each other on Tuesday to decide the top spot in the group.

Earlier, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) issued a statement mentioning that the remaining games of the German pair in Group C, against India (on Monday) and France (on Tuesday) will ‘not be played’.

“German men’s doubles player Mark Lamsfuss has withdrawn from the Olympic Games Paris 2024 badminton competition due to a knee injury,” the BWF statement read.
