Asian Games 2023: Praggnanandhaa, Humpy lead Indian men's and women's teams to coveted silvers in chess

The Indian men's and women's chess teams clinched silver medals at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, amplifying India's impressive medal count.

Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Vantika Agrawal, and Savita Shri earned silver for India in women's chess.Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi, and Harikrishna Pentala clinched another silver in men's chess.

India's men's and women's chess teams shone bright at the Hangzhou, Asian Games as they bagged coveted silver medals in their respective team events, making the nation proud on Saturday, October 7. 

The dynamic women's squad, comprising chess maestros Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, budding stars R Vaishali, Vantika Agrawal, and Savita Shri, faced an intense showdown in the final round. Battling against the home team, a favorite in the tournament, the Indian women displayed exemplary skills and tactics. Despite their best efforts, they had to settle for a silver, marking the nation's 106th medal at the Asian Games.

Not to be left behind, the men's chess team showcased their strategic prowess in their final encounter against the Philippines. Emerging victorious in this crucial game, they not only secured another silver medal for India but also extended the country's overall medal tally to 107. The formidable men's contingent featured young prodigies like Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, along with seasoned players Vidit Gujrathi, and Harikrishna Pentala.

While the Indian teams celebrated their remarkable achievements, Iran emerged as the gold medalists in the event, demonstrating their dominance in the sport.

 

 

Meanwhile, Iran finished on top to bag gold in the men’s team event while China clinched gold in the women’s event.

 

The achievements of the Indian chess teams at the continental multisport event underscore the nation's growing prowess in the intellectual sport. Their dedication, strategy, and immense talent have not only earned them accolades but also bolstered India's standing in the overall medal tally of the Games which has now gone upto 107.
