India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games has driven them to formally submit a bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, proposing Ahmedabad as the host city, as per a PTI report. The official deadline for submitting the 'Expression of Interest' to host the Games was March 31. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ensured that India's letter of intent was dispatched well in advance, sending it a few days before the stipulated deadline.
"Yes, it is true, India's bid has been submitted by the IOA and the state of Gujarat," the ministry source stated, as quoted by PTI.

Ahmedabad, selected as India's proposed host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, is also positioned as the leading candidate to host the 2036 Olympic Games should India's bid prove successful. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), now rebranded as Commonwealth Sport, will now oversee the evaluation process, with the final decision on the host city being determined by the CGF General Assembly.
This bid submission follows recent affirmations from Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who publicly expressed India's interest in hosting the Games. India, which previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, is actively pursuing its ambition to host the 2036 Olympics.
Furthermore, India had previously proposed hosting the disciplines removed from the 2026 Commonwealth Games, aiming to safeguard its medal count when the event takes place in Glasgow. However, this proposal was subsequently rejected by the CGF.
Despite the rejection of India's earlier proposal regarding the 2026 CWG, CGF CEO Katie Sadleir expressed a positive outlook on India's potential to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. She publicly stated that such an undertaking would be a significant step forward in India's pursuit of its larger goal: hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.
India's history of hosting large-scale, multi-sport events is relatively limited. The 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 1982 Asian Games represent the only two instances of such events being held within the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi first articulated his government's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics during the 2023 International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai.
India's bid, however, will face stiff competition from several other nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, all of whom are actively positioning themselves as strong contenders for the prestigious sporting event. A final decision regarding the host of the 2036 Olympics is not expected before 2026.
The process of selecting the 2036 Olympic host is anticipated to accelerate following the successful conclusion of the IOC's Annual Session in Greece, which saw the election of former Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry as its first female President. India has taken a big step forward by submitting a 'Letter of Intent' to host the Games.
