India's Gulveer Singh creates history with 5,000m bronze medal at Commonwealth Games debut

Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh capped a remarkable debut at the Commonwealth Games with a bronze medal in the men's 5,000 metres, following his historic silver in the 10,000 metres earlier in the week. 

The 28-year-old from Uttar Pradesh first etched his name in Indian athletics history by claiming silver in the 10,000m, becoming the first Indian to win a medal in that event at the Games. He clocked 27:49.78 seconds in rainy conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, finishing just behind Australia's Ky Robinson while ending decades of African dominance in the discipline.

Singh then followed up with a strong performance in the 5,000m to secure bronze, making him the first Indian to medal in both events at the same Commonwealth Games. The Army athlete's tactical racing and powerful finishing kicks have boosted India's athletics campaign in Glasgow, where the team now sits fourth in the overall medal tally with 35, as of this writing. 

Gulveer’s achievements highlight the growing strength of Indian distance running on the international stage. He has also won a silver and a bronze medal at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, and a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Games.
