Italy's Jannik Sinner wore down a struggling Novak Djokovic and stormed into Wimbledon final with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win at Centre Court on July 11. Sinner will now face Carlos Alcaraz in a bid to win his maiden Wimbledon grand slam.
Earlier on July 11, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz beat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to advance to the Wimbledon final.
Rising stars Sinner and Alcaraz will play a rematch after a month of the French Open final. Sinner will look to get revenge on Alcaraz and win his fourth Grand Slam title.
“Hopefully it's going to be a good match, like the last one,” Sinner said after the win. “I don't know if it'll get better, because I don't think it's possible.”
With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal retired, and Djokovic not anywhere near his peak fitness, Sinner and Alcaraz are the next big rivals. Alcaraz is happy with the way things have panned out.
“The things we are doing right now are great for tennis,” Alcaraz said.
In the semifinal clash, the 38-year-old Djokovic was not at his best. He was trying hard to take one step closer to 25th grand slam title but it wasn't to be. The quarterfinal match where he slipped a few times, took a toll on his body. He had to cancel his practice session. During the second set, he had to take medical attention on his upper left leg but it did not make much difference. Sinner did not face much trouble beating an unfit Djokovic.
“We all saw, especially in the third set, that he was a bit injured,” Sinner said. “He's been in a very difficult situation.”
Alcaraz apologised to Djokovic
In the post-match press conference, Djokovic revealed that Sinner apologised to him after the match.
“He [Sinner] apologised for me feeling bad today,” Djokovic told reporters. “There’s nothing to apologize for from his side. Obviously, he’s done very well for himself today, and for the last year and a half, he’s been the best player in the world.”
Djokovic said that he wished Sinner luck for his first Wimbledon final. He acknowledged that Sinner and Alcaraz are levels above everyone in world tennis right now.
“He’s gonna have a chance to win his first Wimbledon title. I wished him luck, it’s gonna be his first final here, and I’m sure he’s going to be super pumped. After the finals they played in Paris, I think the anticipation for this final is big. It’s amazing. They’re definitely several levels above everyone right now,” he added.
