Philippines' Alexandra Eala dumped defending champion Iga Swiatek out of Wimbledon 2026

Alexandra Eala pulled off a 7-6 (11/9), 6-2 win over Swiatek

Wimbledon 2026 witnessed a monumental upset on Centre Court this Saturday as defending champion Iga Swiatek was knocked out in the third round by a phenomenal Alexandra Eala.

The 21-year-old from the Philippines showed incredible composure to outlast the Polish third seed in a grueling, 84-minute opening set before accelerating to a historic 7-6 (11/9), 6-2 straight-sets victory. For Świątek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, the defeat marks her earliest departure from a major since her third-round exit at the hands of Yulia Putintseva on these very same lawns two years ago.

Eala's fairytale run has continually rewritten tennis history for her nation. Just two days after becoming the first Filipino player in the Open Era to make the third round of a major by beating Maya Joint, the 29th seed proved she belonged on the sport's biggest stage. Showing no signs of intimidation against the world superstar, the talented left-hander secured her second career victory over Świątek in three head-to-head meetings. Next up for Eala is a Monday showdown against former finalist Jasmine Paolini, where she will try to become the first Filipino singles player to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Felicisimo Ampon at the 1953 French Open.

After feeding off the electric energy of her passionate home fans on the outside courts during the opening rounds, Alexandra Eala proved she could dominate just as well in the quieter, more imposing atmosphere of Centre Court. The 21-year-old completely dismantled the composure of Iga Swiątek, who was already reeling from a disappointing round-of-16 exit at the French Open. Świątek’s afternoon unraveled under the weight of 44 unforced errors, a downward spiral that accelerated after she failed to capitalize on two crucial set points during a tense opening-frame tie-break.

The first set had already seen its fair share of drama when Eala surged to a 5-3 lead but failed to serve it out, squandering a set point of her own. The subsequent tie-break turned into a high-stakes war of attrition with both players missing opportunities, until Świątek sent a backhand long to hand Eala the lead on her fourth set point. Capitalizing on her shell-shocked opponent, the world number 32 stormed into a definitive 4-0 lead in the second set. Though Świątek fought valiantly to reclaim a break, a sloppy service game plagued by two double-faults pushed her back to a 5-2 deficit. The final game provided one last burst of theater as Eala fended off four break points before hammering a forehand winner on her third match point, collapsing to the grass in tears of joy as Świątek made a quick exit.
