Ngidi ended up banging his head on the ground while attempting a catch

A big update on Lungi Ngidi has emerged after the South African pacer picked up a horrific head injury during an IPL 2026 match. Ngidi suffered a distressing head injury during the IPL 2026 match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 25. The incident occurred during the second innings while Punjab's Priyansh Arya was batting against Axar Patel. As Ngidi backtracked from mid-off to attempt a catch, he lost his balance and fell awkwardly, striking his head against the ground.

Lungi Ngidi is stable, set to be discharged shortly

The impact left Ngidi motionless on the field for several minutes, prompting an immediate medical response. Play was halted for 14 minutes as the team physiotherapists and doctors rushed to his aid. Ngidi was subsequently stretchered off the field at 6:07 PM and transported to the BLK-Max Super Specialty Hospital in Rajendra Nagar. To ensure he received urgent care without delay, the Delhi Traffic Police established a "green corridor," allowing the ambulance to reach the hospital in just 11 minutes.

Upon arrival, medical staff at the venue noted that Ngidi initially reported blurred vision and a headache, though he remained conscious and stable. Fortunately, a CT scan performed at the hospital ruled out any spinal injuries. Later, as per the latest injury update extracted by Sports Tak from the hospital, Ngidi is now in stable condition and is set to be discharged from the hospital shortly.

Following Ngidi's injury, DC made a forced tactical change by bringing in Indian all-rounder Vipraj Nigam as his concussion substitute. Nigam replaced the South African pacer for the remainder of the contest, an adjustment the team had to navigate quickly during the high-stakes encounter.

The incident occurred toward the end of a physically demanding evening for the Capitals, who had been tested by the punishing New Delhi heat. Delhi’s innings had been defined by a batting masterclass anchored by KL Rahul, who carried his bat for a historic unbeaten 152. This score stands as the highest ever by an Indian player in IPL history and the third-highest individual score in the tournament’s annals. Supported by Nitish Rana’s explosive 91 off 44 deliveries, the pair compiled a massive 220-run partnership, leading the Capitals to a formidable total of 264/2.

PBKS' record chase against DC

Despite posting such a daunting target, the Delhi Capitals were ultimately unable to defend it against the Punjab Kings. Demonstrating their impressive form this season, the Punjab Kings successfully completed the highest run chase in the history of both the IPL and all T20 cricket, securing a stunning six-wicket victory.
