Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are sued by a sneaker company. The dispute centres on potential consumer confusion from the identical mark, derived from the players' jersey numbers 15 and 87.
The quarterback and the tight end, with business partner Noble, opened their steakhouse last year, combining Mahomes' and Kelce's jersey numbers to give it the name, and this is where the problem starts.
Why are Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce sued by sneaker company?
A sneaker company has an infringement lawsuit against Mahomes and Kelce, along with their business partner Noble, over the name of their Kansas City steakhouse, 1587 Prime, according to court records, as reported by ESPN.
The plaintiff, 1587 Sneakers, claims the restaurant's use of the "1587" mark, derived from combining Mahomes' jersey number 15 and Kelce's 8, causes consumer confusion and damages its brand.
The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleges that "scores of consumers" have contacted the sneaker firm mistakenly believing it is affiliated with the high-end restaurant, and it seeks to bar further use of the name plus halt related apparel sales.
1587 Sneakers states it began selling footwear under the 1587 brand on April 13, 2023, establishing prior use in commerce, though it only applied for federal trademark registration in October 2025, still pending.
In contrast, the 1587 Prime restaurant group filed its trademark application in December 2023, with some sources noting an earlier August 2023 intent-to-use filing, covering bar and restaurant services, while the sneaker company's application targets clothing and apparel categories.
Meanwhile, as of now, the publicist for Kelce declined to comment, and a representative for Mahomes did not respond to a message from ESPN.
