Abhay Singh settles for Silver in Asian Games Squash Final; falls short on Olympic quota

Abhay Singh has won the silver medal in the men’s singles event at the 20th Asian Games on Sunday after falling to Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow, the top seed and defending champion from the 2022 Hangzhou Games, in the gold-medal match. Ng Eain Yow retained his title, denying India its first individual Asian Games gold in men’s singles squash.

Singh had earlier secured his place in the final with a straight-games semi-final victory over Pakistan’s Muhammad Ashab Irfan. The Indian squash player’s run to the summit clash made him only the second Indian man to reach the Asian Games men’s singles final, following the legendary Saurav Ghosal, who claimed silver medals in both 2014 and 2023.

Abhay produced a strong campaign throughout the tournament at the Nagoya Kinjo-Futo Arena. While the gold remained elusive, the silver marks another important milestone for Indian squash on the continental stage. His achievement adds to India’s growing medal tally in the sport at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games.

However, by losing the gold medal match, he has also fallen short of the Olympic quota. Meanwhile, India’s hope to win the gold medal in squash continues as Anahat Singh plays Sivasangari Subramaniam in the women’s singles final after Abhay Singh’s heartbreak.
