Bobby Miller, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ promising right-handed pitcher, faced a frightening moment during Thursday’s exhibition opener against the Chicago Cubs when he was struck in the forehead by a scorching 106-mph line drive off the bat of Michael Busch. The incident knocked Miller out of the game, but in an unexpected turn, the pitcher’s reaction has been more of curiosity than dread, having watched the terrifying moment multiple times.

Bobby Miller's surprising reaction to the scary moment

I’ve probably watched it a hundred times, at least, Miller said during a Saturday morning workout, reflecting on the shot that hit him in the head.

Despite his usual aversion to watching such injuries unfold, Miller admitted that this time was different.

Whenever I’ve seen a video of a pitcher getting hit in the head, I’ve never been able to watch it. I’m always like, ‘Get that out of my face.’ I always feared that. But now that it’s happened, I’ve been able to watch it. Scary moment, but it’s all good. I’m all right.

While the blow was frightening, Miller walked off the field under his own power, heading straight into concussion protocol. Although he’s still dealing with lingering symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and sleep issues, his condition appears to be improving.

Bobby Miller's recovery process and mental toughness

The 24-year-old pitcher, who is working to bounce back from a difficult 2024 season, expressed that the injury, while unsettling, wasn’t as severe as he initially feared.

It kind of knocked me down, but I was able to walk off all right. Hopefully, I’ll get back to action soon.

Miller also mentioned that he had difficulty sleeping due to replaying the incident in his mind, but he remains optimistic.

Miller’s past experience made him particularly wary of taking a line drive to the head, but he found comfort in the fact that the injury could have been much worse.

I’m just glad it didn’t get me in the temple or the back of the head, he said. It got me right in the front. God is great. He was watching me right there.

No major damage to Bobby Miller

Fortunately, scans revealed that Miller had no broken bones, and his vision was unaffected by the hit. His brain scans returned normal, allowing him to focus on recovery.

Each day is getting better, Miller said. Right now, I’m not nervous to go back out there. When that moment comes, we’ll see what happens. All I’m thinking about is getting healthy and getting back on the field soon, because that’s what I really want.
