Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a heavy defeat to get knocked out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The Yellow Army failed to chase a massive target of 230 runs against Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans on Thursday, May 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ruturaj Gaikwad faces big punishment from BCCI

In the series of unfortunate events, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been slapped with a fine worth Rs 24 Lakh by BCCI after being found guilty for maintaining slow over-rate at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

This was the second instance this season where CSK have been found on the wrong side and as a result Gaikwad was asked to fork out Rs 24 Lakh fine with the entire playing XI and Impact Player Kartik Sharma also fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective game fees.

Bad performance from CSK

Coming back to the game, CSK had a forgetful outing with the bat. With Sanju Samson losing his wicket on the very first ball of the game, it became very tough for the Yellow Army to chase the target. However, Matt Short and Ruturaj tried to show some intent with quick short innings of 24 off 14 and 16 off 7. CSK's destructive batter Urvil Patel got dismissed on a duck. After losing four wickets in quick succession, Impact player Kartik Sharma looked in a good touch before getting run out on 19 runs.

All-rounder Shivam Dube tried to unsettle the GT bowling line-up with his destructive 47 runs off just 17 balls, hitting four sixes and four boundaries before getting out on Rashid Khan's delivery. Yet again, Dewald Brevis failed to create an impact with the bat as he managed to score only eight runs off 10 balls. Eventually, CSK bundled out on just 140 runs, losing the game by 89 runs.

For GT, Mohammed Siraj was given the Player of the Match award for his stunning spell of 3/26, he managed to get the initial breakthroughs of Samson, Ruturaj and Urvil which turned out to be the game-changer. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada also registered a three wicket haul, dismissing Matt Short, Spencer Johnson and Noor Ahmad.

Mystery Spinner Rashid Khan was also instrumental in GT's  massive win, as he picked three wickets by giving just 18 runs. The leg-spinner managed to dismiss dangerous Shivam and Dewald Brevis and Anshul Kamboj.
