India will lock horns against Afghanistan in the first ODI of the three-game series on Saturday, June 13 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. With Virat Kohli missing the series because of a hamstring injury endured in the IPL 2026 final, Yashasvi Jaiswal was named as his replacement. However, still there is no guarantee of Jaiswal getting a place in the playing XI, as he is a specialist opener and can not play at the middle order.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's future in ODI cricket
Reacting to the tricky situation, former India batter Virender Sehwag has claimed that the star left-handed opener might get a proper playing time after Rohit Sharma bids farewell to International cricket after 2027 ODI World Cup, as there is no space at the top order.

“But there is no space right now. Shubman Gill is the captain. Rohit Sharma is playing. As soon as Rohit Sharma retires, you will see Jaiswal playing white-ball and one-day cricket as well. Ruturaj Gaikwad might be a competitor of his, though. But if you take three openers, you will definitely see Jaiswal among them,” said Sehwag to Cricbuzz.
Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal has played four matches in his ODI career so far, where he managed to score his maiden century against South Africa at Visakhapatnam which happened to be his last appearance in the format.
While talking further, Sehwag noted that Jaiswal has only played four games so far because someone from the main players was out because of an injury which is not unfair on him, as it wasn't like that he got dropped despite performing good.
“See, he has come into the ODI team only because someone like Gill or Sharma wasn’t available. It was not like that he got the chance and then he didn't perform. He performed very well when he got the chance. It was not like he was dropped after not performing. He was in the team because someone wasn’t playing," added Sehwag.
Jaiswal's underwhelming batting form
It would be wrong to say that Jaiswal is going through the best of form at the current point of time, as he is coming out of an underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign and a flop outing in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, where he played a knock of 24 off 32 balls despite getting a promising start.
In the recently concluded IPL 2026, the star Rajasthan Royals opener managed to amass 427 runs in 16 games at an average of 30.50 with a strike rate of 152.50. The star left-handed opener had scored only three half-centuries with unbeaten 77 against Mumbai Indians being his best score.
