Wicketkeepers Rishabh Pant and Litton Das had a heated exchange in first session of Day 1 of first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Litton wasn’t happy with Pant taking a single after the ball deflected off his pads via a throw.
The incident took place in the 16th over of the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal defended the ball towards gully. Pant wanted a single but was sent back. The throw hit his pads and deflected to mid-on. Pant made use of it and took a single to get the strike back.
Litton confronted Pant to which the latter said, "usko bhi to dekho na bhai mujhe kyu mar rhe ho (Why are you hitting me? Look what he did.)"
However, the Bangladesh wicketkeeper wasn’t convinced and said, “Wicket samne hai to marega hi (You’re in front of the wicket. He will throw)”.
The confrontation was followed by loud cheers from the spectators. Earlier, when Virat Kohli lost his wicket to Hasan Mahmud and Pant walked out to bat, there was a loud cheer. This is Pant’s first Test since the unfortunate car accident on December 30, 2022.
Pant’s counter-attack on Test return
Pant played a conunter-attacking knock as India were struggling for 34/3 in the 10th over. Pant and Jaiswal helped India recover from the early wickets. They shared a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Pant hit six fours in his knock before becoming Mahmud's fourth victim of the day. He flashed his bat at a delivery away from the stumps as Litton took a regulation catch. The southpaw scored 39 runs from 52 balls.
Shanto ends long-running streak in Chennai
Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to field first. He became the first captain in 42 years to do so at the venue. It worked in visitors’ favour as India lost three wickets in the first hour. Both the captains have included three seamers each in their lineup considering the pace-friendly conditions in Chepauk.
