Mohammed Shami has not played a single game since ODI World Cup 2023 final.

Shami is currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the World Cup.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami showed his mettle with a record-breaking display in ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 where he helped the hosts reach the final. Since the loss to Australia in the final, Shami has not played a single match as he is recovering from an ankle injury. While it is not certain when the 33-year-old will return to competitive cricket, he has spilled the beans on when he will announce his retirement.

“The day I start getting bored of cricket, I will leave it. I don't need to take the burden of anything, nor is anyone there to explain it to me, nor does anyone in my family tell me anything. The day I wake up and feel ‘Oh man! I have to go to the ground’. On the same day I will announce my retirement on Twitter (X),” Shami said in an interaction with News18.

Shami names the best captain

Shami was also asked who he feels is the best captain he has played under. Shami feels that the comparisons are unfair as it is not just objective but subjective.

“It is different for everyone. These things start with comparisons, but you will say the one that has been most successful. So for me, it is MS Dhoni because no one has been as successful as him,” he said.

Shami’s views of pace battery’s rise

Shami also talked about the evolution of India's pace battery which started in 2013-14. He feels that the Indian pace attack's future is bright considering the impact they have made of late.

"People talk about the performance of the bowlers during the World Cup, but, if you have to look at the overall picture, you have to go back to 2013 and 2014. That is where the journey started. If we look at the facts now, we only had three fast bowlers performing in the World Cup this time, which makes us believe that we have set the benchmark for future bowlers," Shami added.

When will Shami return?

Meanwhile, India’s squad for the remaining three Tests against England is yet to be announced. If Shami does not make a comeback, he is likely to return to the field in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Gujarat Titans (GT).
