Bizarre scenes unfolded during the second ODI between India and England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha. Chasing 305 runs, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill came out aggressively, quickly adding 48 runs in the first six overs and seizing the momentum.
India vs England 2nd ODI abruptly halted
Just as India seemed to be cruising towards the target, play was disrupted when a floodlight tower malfunctioned. The lights went out not once, but three times, causing increasing frustration among the players. After a lengthy discussion, the players were eventually forced off the field while technicians worked to repair the damaged floodlights.
The seventh over of the match brought an unexpected interruption when one of the floodlights began to flicker and then went out completely. Although the technicians appeared to have resolved the issue initially, the flickering recurred, forcing the players to leave the field. At the time of the interruption, India had reached 48 runs without losing any wickets after 6.1 overs.
Meanwhile, India skipper Rohit Sharma was seen having a tense chat with the umpire after the incident. However, the umpires requested the player to walk off the field.
When the match was halted, Rohit was unscathed on the crease at 36 runs off 22 balls while Shubman Gill was at 18 off 20.
Earlier, England posted a strong total of 304 in 49.5 overs. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England's openers, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, once again provided a solid foundation. Duckett was particularly impressive, scoring 65 runs off 56 balls with 10 boundaries. Joe Root, returning to ODIs after a considerable absence, contributed a well-crafted 69 runs.
Useful contributions also came from Liam Livingstone (41), Jos Buttler (34), and Harry Brook (31). For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for just 35 runs in his 10 overs, which included a maiden over.
