Following Pakistan's underwhelming performance in the World Cup 2023, Babar's captaincy has come under strict scrutiny. The team's inability to progress beyond the group stage for the third consecutive time, registering only four wins out of nine matches, has sparked discussions about leadership changes. In nine matches of the World Cup 2023, Babar mustered just 320 runs at an average of 40 and a strike rate of just over 80. Many cricket pundits considered his conservative batting approach as a contributing factor to Pakistan's struggles.
In a recent World Cup special show on a local media channel, Amir advocated for a split captaincy model for the Pakistan cricket team. Amir suggested appointing Imad Wasim as the captain for T20I matches, particularly in light of the upcoming T20 World Cup. Wasim recent comeback came in the series against Afghanistan in shorter formats in April this year. The star all-rounder has not been a part of the ODI squad since November 2020 and was not selected for the World Cup, with Mohammed Nawaz being preferred over him.
"For the T20I format, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon and a series of T20 matches and a Test series against Australia lined up before the mega-event, I pick Imad Wasim," Mohammad Amir said.
For ODI captaincy, Amir recommended Shan Masood, who has been a consistent performer in both domestic cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Masood's leadership qualities and experience in longer formats make him a strong candidate for the role.
Meanwhile, for Tests, Amir suggested the return of Sarfaraz Ahmed, a seasoned campaigner with a proven track record. Ahmed's experience and ability to lead from the front, as demonstrated during his previous stint as Pakistan's Test captain, could prove invaluable in reviving the team's fortunes in the red-ball format. To further strengthen the leadership structure, Amir proposed appointing a youngster as vice-captain in Test cricket. This would provide an opportunity to groom a future leader and ensure continuity in the long run.
“In ODI, if you want to change regime then Shan Masood can be a very good option,” Amir further stated.
“If you want to prepare any youngster for Test captaincy, Sarfaraz still has 2 years left in cricket, so appoint him as the captain along with a youngster as vice-captain,” Amir concluded.
