Babar Azam's Pakistan are all but out of the ODI World Cup's semifinal contention following New Zealand's commanding win over Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on Friday, November 9. Kane Williamson-led Kiwis, with 10 points and a net run rate (NRR) of +0.743 under their belt, have virtually pushed Pakistan out of the top four. Pakistan, currently in fifth place with an NRR of +0.036, now need a near-impossible win against England in their last league match to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

The scenario demands Pakistan to either score an overwhelming 400-450 runs if batting first and then restrict England to under 100, or chase a set target in just 2.4 overs if batting second – tasks seen as impractical. Meanwhile, former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, however, remains hopeful, citing cricket’s unpredictability and Fakhar Zaman’s form.
In a TV show, Amir said that Pakistan have the potential to post a total of 400-450 runs and limit England to less than 100 runs.
“Pakistan can score 400-450 runs and restrict England to under 100. This is a possibility in case Fakhar Zaman gets going the same way he did against New Zealand. You never know in cricket and I’m serious about it,” said Mohammad Amir.
Pakistan's journey in the World Cup so far has been a mix of highs and lows. They showed promise with initial victories against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka but faced setbacks with consecutive four losses to teams like India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa. However, they did bounce back with resounding wins against Bangladesh and New Zealand, but to only find them in tenterhook in the semifinal contention. They must produce what would be a miraculous performance to stay in the hunt of semi-final berth. Meanwhile, New Zealand's position looks secure as they prepare possibly for a semi-final clash with India.
