During their World Cup match against England on Sunday, the Indian cricket team will be donning black armbands in tribute to the iconic spinner and ex-captain Bishan Singh Bedi who passed away on October 23.
"The BCCI announced that Team India is wearing Black Armbands today in memory of the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi who passed away on 23rd October 2023," the statement was released shortly after the World Cup game began.
Bedi leaves behind his wife Anju, daughter Neha, and son Angad. From his previous marriage to Glenith Miles, he is survived by Gavas Inder Singh and his daughter Gillinder. The cricket legend had been facing health challenges for around two years, undergoing several surgeries, including a knee operation.

The iconic spinner, who passed away last week at 77 after a long illness, captained India from 1976 to 1978 in 22 Test matches. His cricket career spanned from 1967-1979, during which he played 67 Tests and 10 ODIs for India. Additionally, he led the national team in four ODIs during this period.
When he hung up his boots, Bedi held the record for the highest number of wickets by an Indian in Tests, with a tally of 266 wickets at an average of 28.71.
Bedi was a key figure in India's famed spin quartet, alongside Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan.
Meanwhile, with a lot at stake at both ends of the points table for India and England, Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first. The plan seemed to work as the batting unit were unable to keep up their good form from their previous five matches.
Only Rohit Sharma was in good form as the team skipper managed to score 87 runs in just 101 balls, with 10 fours and 3 sixes to his name. Kohli was condemned to a duck, his first at the ODI World Cup, while only KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav have managed to touch double figures.
