Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed rescued rescued Pakistan from a jittery start and helped the team post a respectable 159-run total in the high-octane clash against arch-rivals India in their T20 World Cup Super-12 tie at the MCG on Sunday (October 23).
While Masood mustered 52 off 42, Iftikhar scored a quickfire 51 off 34 when Pakistan needed it the most.
But what caught everyone's eyes was a bizarre situation when the spider cam cable evaded a plausible catch chance to dismiss Shan Masood. He was beaten in the air by Ashwin as he went for a big hit, and the ball swirled off the edge over the covers. Kohli ran in from the deep but had to stop as the ball clanged on the cable and dropped down straight.
Hardik Pandya was seen cussing as he shouted ‘for f***’s sake’. Rohit Sharma too had an expletive escape his lips. So did many Indian players.
The umpire would signal a dead ball but Pandya and Rohit had more serious concerns about a wasted chance of a dismissal. Rohit shook his hands furiously to suggest the spider cam be moved further away. So did Pandya. And so did the umpire. Masood was on the 31 then and it was the 15th over. Later he went on to score an unbeaten half century and cruise Pakistan to post a competitive total.
Sent into bat, Pakistan were well served by Iftikhar Ahmed’s 34-ball 51 and Shan Masood’s unbeaten 52 off 42 balls after they lost their first two wickets with just 15 runs on the board in the fourth over.
For India, Arshdeep Singh was among the most successful bowlers in the much-awaited match of the tournament, finishing with figures 3/32 in four overs at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
If it was not for the 14 runs in the 19th over, Arshdeep would have ended with better figures Playing in his maiden World Cup, left-arm pacer Arshdeep gave India early breakthroughs before Pakistan steadied things with a 76-run partnership for the third wicket.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya bagged impressive figures of 3/20 in four overs after Mohammed Shami removed a well-set Iftikhar to trigger a slide.
